La Perla

Mathias shows some Charles, Markham and Chris to the wine cellar

We are at a hotel in Corvara that has earned a special place in our hearts. La Perla is quite simply the best hotel we’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in on our trips. It is owned by the Costa family, and son, Mathias, oversees day-to-day operations with father, Ernesto, never far away. Their eye for detail and sensitivity to guests is exquisite, with many fine touches like fresh apples, two pastries, and a bottle of water in each room. The ambience is at once homey and sophisticated, but never self-conscious. When I ordered a pre-dinner beer in the bar this evening, the waiter also brought me a couple finger sandwiches, olives and vegetable sticks to munch on. Dinner has been reliably outstanding.

All of that’s enough, but what REALLY sets La Perla apart is its bicycle showroom and complimentary bike mechanic. Not to mention that Mathias’s brother, Michil, is president of the Maratona Organizing Committee*. And if that’s not enough, how about Ernesto Costa’s collection of 120 vintage motorcycles on display in a special garage?

La Perla’s 4-star rating is understated based on the merit of its staff and accommodations. Add in the extras, and we’re giving it at least 6 stars.

*For non-cyclists, the Maratona is the most famous Italian Gran Fondo. It takes place each July in the Dolomites, and receives 30,000 requests a year for 8,000 rider slots.

More vintage bikes. Ernesto is too passionate about his collection to let them be used in movies or exhibitions.
