Click on the photo for an mpeg video download.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The heart of Kona, along Ali&#8217;i Drive and Kuakini Highway, is filled with people cheering and otherwise encouraging the runners. \u00a0After mile 9, the run route climbs to Queen K. highway and spectators dramatically thin until the route enters The Energy Lab around mile 17. \u00a0The Energy Lab loop is a 4 mile black hole for runners, remote, no spectators, a time to dig deep for a reason to keep going. \u00a0The climb back to Queen K. is, by all reports, purgatory.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_389\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-389\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-389 \" title=\"IMG_0500\" src=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0500-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0500-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/IMG_0500.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mile 10 on Hualalai Road. Runners going in other direction are at just beginning their run (mile 1.5).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Queen K. ends with a final 1\/2 mi. long 3% grade up to Palani Rd. (mile 25) before a last downhill to the finish line. \u00a0Betsy and I stationed ourselves along the hill, along with a few other spectators, offering encouragement. \u00a0We were greatly appreciated. \u00a0I blew a green vuvuzuela, and whenever I gave my lips a break, a struggling runner&#8211;almost always European, it seemed&#8211;would stagger by and gasp, &#8220;Horn!
