Saturday evening was our first scheduled group activity led by old friend Mike Gomes and Andiamo Adventures, who were providing bikes, itinerary and local guides.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1711\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/SplitGang-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1711\" class=\" wp-image-1711\" src=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/SplitGang-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lunch in a courtyard outside the city museum.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We checked into our hotel and began exploring the town.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By Saturday morning, several from our group had arrived and we visited the Split Museum, ate lunch, met the remainder of our group and were joined by Josko, a native of Split and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>primary Andiamo guide, for a tour of Split.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here\u2019s some of what we learned.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1710\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DioclWall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1710\" class=\" wp-image-1710\" src=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DioclWall-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Formal columns line on side Diocletian&#8217;s Palace&#8217;s central piazza<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Split is the 2nd largest city in Croatia and among the oldest, going back to 290 CE when it became the site for the Roman emperor Diocletian\u2019s retreat and retirement home.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But actually, a Greek city or palace probably occupied the site a few hundred years earlier, which may be how it got its name\u2014Split being a corruption of the Greek word \u201cpalladion,\u201d meaning \u201csafeguard\u201d or \u201ccitadel\u201d. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1709\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DioclPiazza.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1709\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1709\" src=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DioclPiazza-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DioclPiazza-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DioclPiazza.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diocletian&#8217;s Palace central piazza where supplicants could appeal to the emperor.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Diocletian was an interesting guy. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He ruled for 30 years and restored order to a floundering empire that had seen 37 emperors in the prior 50 years. He instituted major organizational reforms, including bringing in 3 close allies to share power, each being assigned to rule a geographical sector of the empire.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He began to tax Romans themselves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And notably, he was the only Roman emperor ever to renounce his position and retire before his death. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1702\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/SplitTowerExt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1702\" class=\" wp-image-1702\" src=\"http:\/\/sayjack.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/SplitTowerExt-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christian bell tower over Diocletian&#8217;s mausoleum&#8211;now a cathedral.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Had he not chosen to suppress the Christians at the end of his reign, he might have been remembered as one of the greatest Roman emperors. But near the end of his rule, Diocletian began a campaign to eradicate Christians, imprisoning and murdering many. Josko calls Diocletian&#8217;s Palace&#8217;s piazza &#8220;Time Square&#8221; because its architecture expresses 2,500 years of history.
